“What is true is that we tried everything. And whether he went to surgery or didn't, the reality is his living body would not have made it. I can only hope his spirit follows us and comes home,”
wrote Marla BB, who operates Hilltown Sleddogs in West Chesterfield.

"When she was 60 years old, Marla BB found herself in the frigid cold of Alaska with only the company of her 12 Alaskan huskies. Now, turning 65 this month, BB has recounted that journey – a three-week trek, 750 miles across the frozen Yukon River to Nome in temperatures that dropped as low as 60 degrees below 0 – in a new, illustrated book, “Our Serum Run Story by the T’s, U’s, V’s & Me!”

"Crossing the snowy wastes of Alaska in deep winter, when the temperature is plunging past 40 belowzero, might not be everybody’s cup of tea. But for Marla BB, it was a little bit of paradise — a three-week sojourn with her own Alaskan sled dogs, pulling her along a historic trail not that far south of the Arctic Circle through a snowbound landscape she calls “magical and mystical … everything was shimmering.”

"Sled dog racing evokes images of canines and their caretakers charging through frozen trees across harsh winter climates. Yet, because of changing New England winters and a frequent lack of snow on the ground, the sport has been forced to adapt in order to survive." - Concord Monitor

Reviving the Serum Run
February 7, 2020
"In January 1925, amid what was thought to be a tonsillitis outbreak, Nome’s only physician had a revelation. Dr. Curtis Welch realized that it wasn’t tonsillitis killing people, it was diphtheria. With barely enough serum to save half a dozen lives, a plan was hatched. At the time, the only way to get to Nome during winter was a 30-day trip by dog team, through 50 below temperatures and 80 mph winds — a treacherous proposal..."

We take you on a trip to West Chesterfield, as Marla BB, from HilltownSleddogs.com, brings us for a ride with her Alaskan huskies…without any snow!
Marla uses techniques that she learned while training with Iditarod racers in Alaska, and built her own facility in Western Mass.
Please note: The ATV used in this segment was turned on and going about 10 mph during the ride, so the huskies are not entirely pulling the vehicle. That would be mean!

There was no snow on the ground Sunday morning, but that did not stop a hardy crew of humans and canines from competing in a variety of dog sledding events at the Quarry Road Trails. All they needed were cool temperatures, good trails and competition.

"We're dog sled people, so we're out all winter long," said Lynda Knowlton, shaking off the temperatures in the high 30s. "These temperatures are awesome. The dogs don't get overheated."
